A King\'s Lament

A king in a castle,

In a city in a country

With no subjects,

Is nothing but a fool.

No jesters and no whores.

No enemies or allies.

No wine and no feast.

A dying old man with delusions of grandeur.

A king who rules over no one.

A king who rules over sand and ruins.

A man who thinks himself a god

Will die without an heir.

Alone, alone, alone.

Abandoned by his people;

His blandished followers.

Left to die in misery.

“My soldiers will kill you!” he howls.

No one is there.

The king is blind and crippled.

An empty shell of his former self.

A king in a castle

Dies squealing in his throne.

Basking in disgrace.

Breathing the tainted air of arrogance.

A king in a castle dies alone.
