Remembrance

writersblock

Memories are a wondrous thing

Some stay hidden in the backs of our minds

Unbeknownst to us

And a simple smell can bring the memory

Rushing forward as though it has just happened

Walking into that greasy burger-joint

That smells of fast food and gluttony

Brings back memories that can’t be forgotten

That smell fills every bone in my body

With memories of you

I thought I had filed them away

For safekeeping and rainy days

But that burger-joint brings them all

To the forefront of my mind

The easy laughs

The easy flirtation

The way I fell for you so easily

And so slowly I hadn’t even realized

Until it was too late

Then the smell fades after awhile

But the memories stay with me

And I’m hit again with the pain

Of knowing that whatever

We had is gone

It has dissipated into the air

And become nothing
