Heloise and Abelard (12th Century Lovers)

Heloise and Abelard (12th Century Lovers)

Twelfth century Paris, a shroud of depression
Their passionate affair, shocked and scandalized
Policies ruled, with sexual repression
A story of true love now immortalized

While striving for knowledge, dear sweet Heloise
Fell deeply in love with her tutor, Abelard
Twenty years senior, he tried hard to appease
The outraged community, when caught off guard

Heavy with child , to Brittany they both fled
The place where Abelard, it is written, was born
Fulbert her uncle, saw them secretly wed
And trickery grew with his hate and his scorn

The dastardly canon had made other plans
To take Heloise, his own life to sweeten
But when she ignored, his un-godly demands
Abelard was taken and brutally beaten

Poor desperate lovers, they were given no choice
But take holy orders, and give up their son
When set far apart and then silenced their voice
Wrote letters in secret, now treasured each one

Never again to set eyes on each other
Oh poor lover's, their only crime was to love
They wept for their son, passed on to another
Then begged the forgiveness of One up above.

Author Notes

Six hundred years later, it was Josephine Boneparte so moved by their story, that she ordered that the

remains of Heloise and Abelard be entomed together at Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

To this day lovers from all over the world visit the tomb where Heloise and Abelard rest eternally together.

WOW DEE ~ You are going all classical on us ! Wonderful poem by a lovely poet ~ on a tragic event in the lives of two innocent people whose only crime was to fall in love. I have relations who are sad Spinsters because their Parents never considered the men they loved good enough. Thanks GOD you and I are free to fall in love (and marry if we wish) whom we will. I knew of Heloise & Albard (love the painting !) but your elegant verse (and codicil) really brought them alive. Thanks for caring and sharing. Elegant poem ~ delicate subject. Your Friend BRIAN

Thank you Brian for your great review.. I read their story and was completely taken by the sadness of it all.. I always love a happy ending to a love story but this one is tragic and heart breaking.. I have copies of some of the love letters they exchanged, they are long and painful to read...Bless them............Yes we are very fortunate to be able to make our own choices for sure..
Smiles and all blessings to you my friend...Dee

I have always loved History Dee, and live could be a very dangerous endeavor back then. You have told this story beautifully and with great charm!

Thank you Daniel for your encouraging review ...I agree with you about the dangerous time and feel very blessed not to have been born then.. I think it was the age gap that outraged the community first and then of course Heloise's uncle who had designs on her himself.. such a tragic story...
Thank you again my friend... Smiles and regards to you Daniel......Dee
