Where There's A Will, There's A Way

Izzi Lynn

The bars of a birdcage cannot hold a butterfly
The metal of a chain cannot trap a fighter
The glass ceiling of a limit cannot stop a dreamer

Can I just mention
where there's a will, there's a way.

The rope binding my hands
will eventually fray
and I will escape.

The gag silencing my mouth
will eventually rip
and I will scream and shout and raise all hell.

The limits you place on me
do not confine me or define me,
they are for me to break.

The times you beat me down
do not destroy me,
they teach me how to get back up again.

Can I just mention
where there's a will, there's a way.

I was told:
don't be afraid of what they say,
don't let silly words stop you.

I told people who try to chain, try to cage, try to put limits
"All people are equal"
they tell me that my words are wrong, are bad, are deceitful.
I told them: "Well it's an interesting coincidence
that my words would cause such dissidence."
They told me that gays, that blacks, that Muslims,
that these people or those are all abominable.
So I told them that they were intolerable.

And I s'pose that in this land,
one must either fall or stand.
I dug my heels into the ground
And told them I would not be easy to take down.
I refuse to back down or give in,
I believe in what's within.
I will not let them make me cower,
I will bloom because I am a flower.

The bars of a birdcage cannot hold a butterfly,
the metal of a chain cannot trap a fighter,
the glass ceiling of a limit cannot stop a dreamer.

So can I just say:
where there's a will, there's a way.
