My Smile
My smile is a light to brighten the day My smile breaks the ice when there’s no words to say
My smile is a banner revealing intent And letting you know how much my soul has been spent
My smile can bring comfort, or solace and joy It beams ear to ear, and can sometimes seem coy.
But my smile most of all is a fortress of stone Protecting the real me, my own flesh and bone.
It keeps you at bay, at arms length, not too close A place where I pray that the truth be exposed.
A smile can be lovely, a sight to behold But for me a smile is a mask that covers tragedies untold.
Sometimes a smile is just a smile But other times it’s a cloak, hiding heart breaking trials.
