Egret Geese

Egret Geese

They were as geese to us

With flock after flock flying

In a formation much

With wings white and shining

Each cow was escorted

By her own single bird

And in the summer sun

Many were amongst the herd

Every afternoon they would fly

Wave after wave of them

To their roost to stay the night

Until time to fly again

Work began at 8 AM

When cattle went to graze

With the geese flying in

To where they’d spend the day

Their slender necks were curved

And ready to strike out

With the insects disturbed

And flying all about

When the day was finally done

They flew back to colonies

Where they perched for a while

Packed in many trees
