Stay

By midnight, it was clear.
The moon rose in chains,
Presiding over our humble chaos.
I heard you choke on unconfessed
Desire and the weight of forever,
The sound of it driving me
To distraction as we witnessed
The timeless passage of
Bones and blood, our foundation
Crumbling under reckless fire.
You stood still as the soft night -
Your eyes full of the same flood
That rushed at my own soul,
Speaking to me in the soundless
Syllables of our childhood,
And I could not speak.
Death makes us all mute
In the end, no matter which
Side of it we stumble on.
Light the brightest candle
And wait out the night -
Stay.  Fall into suffering with me.
