Grievous Gethsemane

Tune: Horsley

(\'There is a green hill far away\')

Luke 22 v.39-46

**********

Jesus came to Gethsemane

His soul heavy it be

Said to disciples, Here do stay

In garden, watch and pray

Pray, so you not enter into

Temptations old or new

Then He a little way off went

To pray was His intent

Saying, Father, if you willing

Remove my suffering

But not what I will, but what you

Will be done, ever true

An angel then to Him appeared

From heaven , His soul seared

Angel did Him strengthen, that He

Freshly emboldened be

In an agony, He prayed more

Earnestly, and for sure

His sweat was as great drops of blood

An over-spilling flood

Then after, still disciples slept

Had not their vigil kept

For human tiredness and sorrow

In garden they did know

Lord, who for me brought salvation

Died, then rose for each one

Help us pray, wake, not sleep, so we

Shall from temptation flee
