THIS POEM IS CULLED ~ From accounts of VE DAY and the Celebrations it spawned in Liverpool on 8th May 1945 & the following days ! They could feel the PEACE !
YOU COULD FEEL THE PEACE !
In Liverpool we really knew there has been a WAR
But now it was all over ~ we prayed for ever !
There were gaps in our Street ~ were once there had been houses
There were gaps in our Hearts ~ for Family & Friends
Over 3,000 People had died in Liverpool in the War
But NOW after six years of conflict there was PEACE !
Tables were set up in the Street ~ every House had a Union Jack
Long stored Tins of Pineapple Chunks & Pears were unearthed
Tins of meat ~ Bottles of Wine ~ Fresh baked Scones & Cakes
A feast which us Younger Children had never seen ! It was ......
Christmas (Roast Chicken) Easter (Chocolate) Birthday (Cakes)
All rolled into one ! Before we ate ~ we had two Minutes Silence
For the millions of Servicemen & Women & Civilians who had perished.
Mrs Jones rolled out her Joanna into the Street and played ...........
While we sang all the Old Songs ~ Keep the Home Fires Burning
Roll out the Barrell ~ Land of Hope & Glory & We*ll Mett Again !
We did have some Servicemen who were manning the Ack Ack Guns
And Sailors from different Nationalities & Americans from Burtonwood.
Most of our Fathers were (hopefully) on their way Home some we hadn*t
Seen for Years ! The Church Bells Rang ~ Bonfires were lit and ..........
FIREWORKS appeared ! It sounded like a BLITZ ~ But we knew it WASN*T !
YOU COULD FEEL THE PEACE ~ AMEN !
