Afraid

What will become of you

As you begin that long journey

Towards the ever receding gate

Of promised dreams?

Alone, on an unmarked road

Flanked by life’s random visitors,

Speaking in strange languages,

Pulling you in, pushing you out.

Will quiet nights follow happy days

In that endearing living room of yours

Where your goodness shines

Through every little thing?

And will the smiling faces

On your walls and shelves

Urge you onwards

Or hold you back?

Shall you walk on lightly

Without hunger or thirst,

Thanking the Universe for love and kindness

Without fear of darkness?

Or will your steps be heavy

With regret and loneliness as friends,

Always wondering, always longing

Perhaps a song or sudden light

Will show a way to that place

Where love and thoughts

Are tender friends.

Or maybe a magical prayer

Will calm our troubled hearts

So anxious to love,

So afraid of strange places.
