Vigil

Frantic feet trampled flowers flat.

You took a broken one, gave it to me

as if I could keep it alive; I tried.

Staying up for days in silent vigil,

stem steeped in water,

struggling to survive.

Holding your familiar face in mind,

fading as imprisoned petals fell one by one.

If only I could keep you forever.

But you\'re already gone.
