O day of hell and misery!
O day of darkened gloom!
Day turns to night in smoke-filled fumes
A black death-flower comes to bloom
Towers and temples fall to dust
Man\'s warring madness seen
O woe, the skyline blotted out
Death strikes a blow, vicious and mean
O day of joyful triumph
And everlasting bliss
Hold to Him, the LORD the victorious One
Who meets the guilty world with a kiss
Forgive us, Lord, we know not what we do
Great evil, man rejoices to destroy man
Only you, Lord, can change our hearts
Before you come with winnowing fan
Look, Lord, with mercy on afflicted, bereaved
You who o\'er Jerusalem grieved
Where we may not or cannot understand
Show us so we are not deceived
The Lord\'s great triumph soon shall be seen
Evil vanquished for ever
Love only eternally shall reign
Naught from Him our hearts can sever
O pale grim Hell-rider Death*
Sheathe your sword - this far, no more
O dark of night, give way to light
End of sin, evil, and war
Light of everlasting day dawn on us
Lift our hearts in joy and praise
Trusting in you, King of Kings, Lord of lords for ever
Eternal worship to you we shall raise
