Kavya Thalappil

Ruminations by the window side

Eastern star rises promptly everyday

But why there is so much of grey in here?

Neither a castle nor she a princess,

But these barbed windows

Tinted glass with square mullions

Diamond cut grills and curtains

Blur her vision.

Shadows on the floor and ceiling

Dance a wild dance , beckon her to join.

A body stripped of rhythm

A heart wrenched in grief

Falls into fathomless dark.

Alice, Anna, Emma, friends and allies

Chants of freedom, courage, and love

 Sappho, Hilda, Ann and Emily

Rich in fire and passion

Summon from their throne

Listen! Oh, frail heart, listen.

Flutter of wings, songs of joy

Laugh! My poor little heart, laugh

A laugh that kills fear and breaks the ceiling

Feel! The wind, the cloud, the rain and the sun

Fly, for the sky is vast and time is short

Sing a song and let it go.
