As we walked through the field,
I saw your eyes
at once emblazoned by the sun
& darkened by shadows
caused by objects invisible to me
flitting across
just your field of vision alone.
And, as we crossed,
forever at cross purposes,
I wondered where you were going.
We waded through long grass
like saltwater
up to our waists;
I was afraid.
Your warm hand occasionally
touched mine,
but merely due to memory
& our proximity,
not because our destination
was the same road.
At the end of the field
was a crumbling fence bathed
in sunlight’s kiss.
As I passed this,
I looked back at you where you’d stopped
& knew that was it.
We all must choose;
someone to love,
someone to lose
