The Mountain Laurel

The Mountain Laurel

on her wedding day

the lovely Claire

wore Laurel blossoms

entwined in her hair

fifty Springs and more

a ring as a token

worn with dedication

for a love unbroken

until one soulful day

the angels came

to my darling Claire

for theirs to claim

fairest of flowers

the Mountain Laurel

no fairer than Claire

angel now immortal

cry out my aching soul

could I but awaken

my beautiful love

that heaven has taken

and my faith shaken

with heart now broken

for my departed love

and the life now stolen

and feeling forsaken

I honor her request

with a Laurel wreath

placed upon her breast
