Christmas Card

She waited at the door,

Bare feet on the cold floor,

What will the post bring today?

Cards big and small

Dropped into the hall

With a clatter, a flutter, in disarray.

She scooped them into her hands

Removed the elastic bands

Ran headlong into the kitchen.

Ripped open the envelopes,

Excitement keeping up her hopes.

For a card of a robin in a garden.

There was sparkle, there was glitter,

Funny ones that made her titter

But the best one was almost the last.

It had a robin and some holly,

Very sweet and very jolly,

A scene from Christmas past.

She placed it on the shelf with care,

And she stood back to be able to stare

At her favourite card that year.

Inside was written her name

From her Grandma far away it came

But this card brought her Grandma so near.
