When Trees Go To Sleep

When trees go to sleep and their leaves turn to gold

There’s a magical story about to unfold

For deep in the forest tiny creatures prepare

To color their leaves with the greatest of care

Their palettes are covered with more than just gold

And the colors they choose are a sight to behold

The orange and red, the pink and the yellow

The colors they blend are so lovely and mellow

These sweet little creatures watch over the trees

And dress them for autumn, for each tree to please

They scamper so fast with persistence and ease

And the rustling they make you’ll mistake for the breeze

And when they are done the trees heave a sigh

And bowing their heads know that winter is nigh

For this grand array of color will last

But briefly as do their dreams of the past

Then these tiny creatures bid a fond goodnight

And retire for winter filled with joy and delight

Now the trees are alone as winter draws near

And it’s time to shed leaves and all they hold dear

The trees become dormant, their leaves become brittle

And the wind comes along to help them a little

A shower of leaves like a shower of snow

Will fall to the earth as a blanket below

They’ve now settled in for those long winter dreams

Of dew drops and warmth from the suns radiant beams

All through the winter they sleep in sheer bliss

Awaiting the arrival of that first gentle kiss

The first hint of spring will gently shake

Those ethereal creatures to now be awake

They stretch and they yawn, their slumber was sweet

But there’s work to be done and a job to complete

To waken the trees from their long winter nap

So they light on each bough with a kiss and a tap

“O beautiful trees” their voices do sing

“It’s time to wake up to such wonderful things”

Their chorus swells as the trees come awake

A concert of spring for all to partake

Tiny buds will begin to appear overnight

And unfold into leaves to our wondering delight

The creatures join hands and dance ‘round each tree

They skip and they hop with such unbridled glee

For the trees are their friends and it’s time that we see

That the trees are the best friends to you and to me
