Before You Went Away

You have passed on, and traveled so far...

Do you hear the angels sing ? Is your name on a star ?

For you Irene, there was laughter and pain....

In having known you, it was all for my gain.

What is it like on the other shore

Where your eyes no longer cry,

and your knees hurt no more ?

You said that you were old and weary

and that your eyes were blurry

Now my eyes blur with tears

as I will miss you deeply

My tears fall

We spent the afternoons wiling away the day

When evening came, there was nothing left to say

Tell me what heaven is like....

are your favorite robins there ?

Do the flowers bloom....do the rivers flow ?

What is it like to live in God\'s light

where there is no more darkness or pain ?

Do you walk the streets of gold,

only to share in God\'s grace all over again ?

I wish you could have told me these things...

before you went away.

I\'ll see you one day after I am old.

I am told that my knees will begin to hurt

and I will feel weary.

My age will show, and my eyes will be blurry.

So I\'ll be seeing you one day,

where the birds always sing,

and the streets are made of gold.

I will miss you, Irene, dear friend

You were a constant in my life...

and I loved you

What can I say ...

Things were so different then...

Before you went away
