Hey Little Kitty

Hey little kitty black as the night

Why do you give some folks a fright?

Your fluffy and soft, no harm to be had

Why do they think that you could be bad?

A cat that is black just gets a bad name

But with all other colors, you are just the same

A brindle, a calico, and a tabby it’s true

May all possess more color than you

But your ebony fur if truth be told

Has a richness, a luster, a sight to behold

Your deep solid color adds mystery and spice

To your prowling and stalking on cold winter nights

Your sly golden eyes can peer far and wide

For your chosen prey there’s no where to hide

The Egyptians revered and worshiped your kind

In their ancient culture you were never maligned

Yet in stories of old you were looked on with fear

People took as the truth what they might overhear

In times long ago, as some legends grew

There were little old ladies who looked after you

They were lonely and poor and friendless as well

They gave you a home, a safe place to dwell

They were looked on as odd, often shunned and belied

With rumors of witchcraft too often implied

Superstition breeds fear, and fear fosters hate

Words that accuse often seal a sad fate

You were named as a cohort by being their pet

They thought you both one, a sinister threat

And so you became the symbol of witches’

With curses, and spells, and lore that bewitches

But you’re just a kitty, no powers have you

You’re the same as the others in all that you do

Your genes are what make you as black as you are

You absorb all the light from each bright shining star

You lie on your back, you stretch and you curl

You play with the yarn as it starts to unfurl

You don’t always come when we give you a call

And what you’ll do next is a mystery to all

To find you a home can be difficult it’s true

But it certainly can’t be that hard to do

Let’s spread the word that a black cat is dear

They’re comical and playful and fun to be near

If you long for a kitty, please don’t pass him by

Don’t stop or hesitate or ask yourself why

Just look at his color and know it is true

That he could be just the kitty for you
