The Hammer
Your love could be like a metal hammer
White hot steel if you cared to pour it out
Or cold steel drawn through the sands of your doubt
Maybe the driving force that splits us apart
Or maybe pulls nails of pain from my heart
It could build a home of love
Or shatter a house of glass
With strength, it could knock your locked door open
Or it could break my yearning heart open
It could peen the shape of a ring
Or smash what was a loving thing
You learned to wield it like a craftsman’s tool
And hammered me into your lonesome fool.
Now as I lie here bone-cold and alone
They wonder at the hammer on my stone
