the last curtain call

She turned her head to see him staring at her

Beautiful promises about riches and big houses and big families

He swept her up, the brightest bluest jewel he had ever seen

He filled every room he was in, leaving no space for any thoughts but his own

He fuelled her desire to escape, he ignited her flame, so her dreams had no limit

Everyone always said she was made for bigger things

So a small town English teacher said goodbye to his first daughter with the brightest bluest eyes, she was meant for bigger things, he knew that

A year later they were married

They bought a farm off the coast, raised 4 dogs, a witty brunette and me

The bright blue gem spent her nights wishing on stars for the love she was promised

He came home on the weekends, alway filling her cup, never asking if she was thirsty

But she had two girls

Their future as bright as her eyes had once been

She spent her years devoted to her two blond haired babies

She showered them in love and adoration

She taught them every thing she knew, grace, forgiveness and acknowledgement

She taught them how to love when all she ever wanted was the only thing he couldn’t give her

Now we are older and the jig is up

30 years is a long time, family vacations and empty promises

The curtain is lifted to reveal a standing ovation from every last person in the room

What a wonderful performance they would say, he’s a natural

You know I really did believe him

He takes a bow and leaves in the middle of the night

He’ll put on a show again next year don’t worry

Only this time maybe his star will know she’s playing a part

Does he get lonely in between takes, alone in his dressing room staring at an empty reflection thinking ‘oh how I fooled them’

Quietly the loneliness seeps through the cracks left by the hate in his heart

He begins to realise…

We’re not buying tickets to see the next show, and the theatre will be void of the love he now craves.
