At the end of the pool

To me he swims
Eyes locked on mine
Stood at the end of the pool
His pace leisurely
As though I’ll always be there
Waiting for him
Stood at the end of the pool

His head dips beneath the water
My breath stills until he returns
But his eyes do not seek mine
He knows I’ll be there
Waiting for him
Stood at the end of the pool

To me he swims
The water has turned cold
He draws near but the distance is chilling
I’ll be here
Waiting for him
Stood at the end of the pool

The ripples from his strokes reach me
But not as a gentle caress
Instead a harsh reminder
As he does not stop
And I have ventured closer
No longer stood at the end of the pool

I should have waited
At the end of the pool
Maybe then he would have swum to me
Instead he swims past
Seeking someone who isn’t necessitous
Who can wait at the end of the pool
