Burning Roses

Burning Roses

The roses that said, “I love you”

years too late, were tossed at the wall.

She then burned what Jack had sent her

as tears into ashes did fall.

“I\'ll burn them, so Thomas won\'t see\"

she cried over promises vowed.

Then swept the ashes from the fire.

Gifts from strangers were not allowed.

She had promised to love Thomas

with words, “Until death do us part.\"

He mustn\'t learn of the roses

for he\'ll know they have stirred her heart.

Thusly, she disposed of the ashes

and then from her finger withdrew

the ring that said she was married.

and with a note, left them in view.

The man she loves is that sailor

born to be afloat on the blue.

Years ago, they would have married

if only he’d said, \"I love you.\"

But today he sent her those roses

red ones that made her feel blue.

For them, it’s too late to marry

and too late for her to be true.

She thought as her face grew paler

“There’s a way that I can be free

and always be with my sailor

yet, true to my wedding vows be”

She made her way to the harbor.

At anchor, Jack’s ship she could see

and there from the highest of cliffs

For his love.... She gave herself to the sea.
