Burning Roses

Burning Roses

They were roses that said, “I love you.”

Years too late, they were tossed at the wall.

She then burned the roses Jack sent her

Her tears into ashes did fall.

“I\'ll burn them, so Tom will not see,”.

she cried o’er the promise she swore

and then for the roses she burned

and the sense of the ring that she wore.

She had promised to love another

forever, “until death do us part.”

She won’t let Tom see the roses

though she knows they have stirred her heart.

Thusly, in the fire she burned them

and then from her finger withdrew

the ring that said she was married.

With a note, she left them in view.

The man she loves is a sailor

born to be afloat on the blue.

To her sailor she would have been wed

years ago, if he’d said,” I love you.”

But today he sent her those roses

red ones that made her feel blue.

It’s too late for them to be married

and too late for her to be true.

“But there’s a way for me to be free

and to always be with my sailor.

while true to my promise I’ll be,”

she thought as she grew ever paler.

As she made her way to the harbor.

at anchor, Jack’s ship she could see

and there from the highest of cliffs

for his love, gave herself to the sea.
