A Bus Stop in the Rain

The Ninth-street bus

was stopped at the corner

She sat by the window

staring out at the rain

She could not conceal

the hurt in her eyes

I could only wonder what

had caused so much pain

I suddenly realized shamefully

She had caught me staring

she was glaring at me

I raised my eyebrows

            And rolled my eyes

Shrugged my shoulders

            And wiggled my ears

The look on her face was total surprise

Then she shook her head

A strange look in her eyes

She flattened her nose

            Against the window

Rolled her eyes, winked at me

            And stuck out her tongue

As the bus pulled away

            She was laughing

And her beautiful laughter

            Brought out the sun
