Tomorrow’s Bridges
My yesterday walked out today
and I know she’ll never return.
She crossed the line while going away
set our bridge afire and watched it burn.
She burned the bridge
this girl named Lorraine.
She talked of friendship
while my love remained.
No note in the morning.
No need to explain.
Hers was the bridge
to an outbound train.
She rolled away
the next heart to betray.
I’ll cross a bridge to another some day
hoping, tomorrow, her love will stay
and all of my troubles will become yesterdays
but-
Charred was that bridge
by the girl called Maureen.
She dreamt of wealth
and riches obscene
treasures and pleasures
beyond our poor means.
They were her bridge
to shallow extremes.
Now, she is running
beyond her own dreams.
I’ll cross a bridge to another some day
hoping, tomorrow, her love would stay
and all of my troubles would be yesterdays
but-
She torched our bridge
the one named Rene.
She craved for more
than my body and name.
My heart was burned
by her sensuous flames.
Her’s was the bridge
to what she became.
She’s now crawling
in ashes of shame.
but-
Tomorrow crossed on a new bridge today
offering her love, not the opposite way.
This time perhaps, the bridge will not burn
and this time, perhaps, she will stay.
