Snow Covered

Snowflakes on her eyelids…Can she see me?

When they melt will she have a moment of clarity?

I pray she sees only the beauty of this winter’s day, and not her decay…

40 winters for us, so many with the boys, all eyes covered in snow, with peeks out of the wonder of love…

Now frail and week…I will carry her if it gets too deep…

I keep my snow-covered eyes downward so she cannot see me weep…

I pull the sleigh through all the snow with her wrapped warm…

Not as she was, when we would crash through another storm…

My snow warrior is now asleep, as I pull her never to complain…

Yesterday she called out and asked where are the boys?

Long gone, for they could not bear her fall…

The woman that would pull all three with such glee…

Now bent and curled under a blanket silently weeping…

The boys will not return, and I cannot pull much longer…

Maybe it’s time I join her under the Afghan she made with their old PJs…

We will just close our snow filled eyes and sleep…and wake up where its warm…

Where all tears are wiped dry, with blue clouds above with nary a storm…

Forty is a blessing baby…

Forty-one in heaven is our destiny…

Please, let\'s go…for I cannot keep you warm anymore.
