Your Leaving
Where does my heart go
at the moment of your leaving?
It seeks to be alone:
To wander on Nature’s hillsides
to climb a mountain
to kayak over the rapids of a river
to sail upon the ocean
to dive beneath the sea
Loneliness does not seek company.
The heart is embarrassed and ashamed
It avoids the public domain
Its pursuits are inherently solo:
Riding on a bicycle
Hiking on woodland trails
Walking on shorelines
Running on a treadmill
Swimming in a pool
Every recluse, hermit, and cat-lady lives with a broken heart.
