Accidental Poet

Oh Yes, I Still Remember You

You were the boy

Who dared to love me

With your own heart at risk

And a future you couldn’t see

We were both so young

At only ten years old

As you gazed at me

Your heart was eternally sold

A secret you kept inside

In your heart hidden so well

Until a letter in my school locker

Your dearest of confessions to tell

You wrote you’d always love me

For all of your days

You’d always remember

The way I smiled that way

I must admit

You had me in surprise

Suddenly I remembered

A long ago look in your eyes

And a day we played golf

A father/daughter father/son golf game

Your letter explained your shyness that day

When I suddenly called your name

And then I moved away

Leaving you behind

Please forgive me for not saying goodbye

For I was at a loss of words to find

I often think of the “what ifs”

If I’d not moved away

If you’d still care for me?

Still love me today

But I know

By now,  you’ve more than likely

Grown up and married

Forgotten all about me

In life love comes and goes

But only one will be true

One will stand out from the rest

Oh yes, I still remember you
