We never think
that who we are
now, though old
ourselves,
could ever be
as old as they
who sit and stare
who stagger up
or down the stairs
whose beloved other half\'s
hardly ever there
in mind, memories\' bare
of what once was
of where they went
or who\'s that man
or woman
do I know them?
I see them on TV
mostly thin
not quite gaunt
those more fit men
wearing jaunty cap
of tweed, atop silvry hair,
far more able
to walk about
with stick in hand
a stagger here, yet
more fit than those
who sit at home
in a chair,
not much to do
than stare into space
