Emily Bradshaw

Only Seventeen

It may seem facetious to some when

I hum along to Pumped Up Kicks driving

To school but I’m just glad I’m surviving

Unlike the neighbor boy shot down at ten.

They fight to protect the number one threat

To life for kids in this country, but God

Forbid we allow that Drag show facade

To jeopardize our kids with that mindset.

I was only seventeen but afraid

Of my classmates I barely knew. I should

Not have been desperately begging for safety

Yet I hid beneath my desk as I prayed

To whatever god would listen and could

Bless me with the chance to live to eighteen.
