The Fall

The Fall

She fell in late September

the brown-haired blonde

with the red hints

or was she a redhead with blonde hints?

It seemed to change every day.

She displayed an air of warmth for several weeks.

She flirted and seemed to be temptation itself.

She was fascinating, a colorful specimen

with features to attract a wandering eye

but there was an aloofness to her

as though she cared not what anyone thought.

One day she had the warmth and tenderness

of a summer lover

and next, she would send a chill down your spine.

I guess she was that certain kind of lover

where it was best to approach her on her days of warmth

and remain silent when she declines for cooler days.

Photographers traveled miles to get pictures of her.

Each would pose her differently

and she flashed her smile for them all

but then things changed. . .

We knew something was wrong

when in a couple of months her hair

began to drop off in clumps.

We gathered it all together and burned it

The experts said it was a natural thing

associated with her age and natural cycles.

Then, it became obvious

as her hair was nearly all gone

it changed its color to white.

Within weeks she was gone. . .

and Winter arrived.
