The day dawned bright and cheery
The waves were low and smooth
A smile and laugh was in everyone\'s heart
On the clean and clear deck of the Goldenrod
Her course was set for Dublin
Her home was the port of New York
A gentleman, duchess, and a young girl in a hat
On the crowded and colorful deck.
The sky began to darken and dim
The waves grew to mountainous size
The bright line of Ireland started to pitch
On the rolling, wet deck of the Goldenrod
A steady wind to the starboard side
Blew them far off their course to the north
Closer to Ireland\'s cliffs it veered
Unnoticed by captain and crew
When a final gale blew them hard upon rocks
The hull caved in with a groan
No soul left alive on that beautiful ship
And the girl\'s hat floated alone.
