Accidental Poet

The Makings of a Poet

It came to my attention

Some years ago

My best friend revealed to me

That he was not so

He scoffed at my poetic pen

That real men don’t write poetry

And what does it take to be a real man?

Resisting the pull of gravity?

Without a doubt

A poet must contemplate

A relationship with inner Muse

 A partnership to negotiate

An expression of sorts

Emotions lurking in the heart

Love, passion, pain, dreams

Aspirations from the start

Unafraid to think outside the box

To follow your Muse’s lead

From as little as one word or idea

Grow a poem from a tiny seed

Confidence feeding upon itself

Believing in your ability

That words can appear from thin air

Building on your stability

And before you know it

You’re well on your way

Look back on what you’ve written

And a poet you think you’ll stay

Heed not the critics quips

For what do they know of writing?

As they make a great subject

Poetry they are inviting

Songwriters are poets too

Dylan, McCartney and Denver

Made famous because they wrote

Words in a poetic manner
