Old Betty and Harry lived down the lane
By the old railway track, the train passed by again and again
Together they had been there for over sixty years
Living amongst the blood sweat and tears
Old Harry having been gassed on the Somme during the First World War
Often thinking he would never see Betty no more
But their love got him through the pain and the hurt
As he fought bravely through the stench, blood and the dirt
As Betty waited anxiously for her true love to return
Her thoughts her only comfort, to ease her hearts yearn
The great day arrived, Harry came home
Now they were free to live and to roam
Down the Lane that they loved together, hand in hand
Their love shining through like Harry’s gold wedding band
Not blessed with children, such a great shame
But sometimes in life that’s the name of the game
So along came old Buster a retriever of a sort
They said he was a pedigree, when he was bought
But Betty and Harry could not have cared less
He was their baby, so now they were blessed
So their life continued, their love growing stronger everyday
Through rain or sunshine or just come what may
Their little thatched cottage, two up two down
At the end of the lane some way from town
A peaceful existence was what they now shared
Their love ever stronger showing they were well paired
All those years ago on their wedding day
Now a life full of memories, a few heartaches along the way
But generally a life full of laughter and togetherness they shared
It shows if you are in love you can be well paired
Eventually they will stroll together through that great pearly gate
Together forever as was destined to be their fate.
