I never expected this
To stand here condemned
Given a cross and a path to follow
I gave you wine and helped you home
Now you condemn me
As if nothing I did mattered
So I drag this bloody cross
Across gravel paths and pavements
Falling over kerbs, picking myself up
Then lifting that damned cross again
I see my mother as she cries
But that was so long ago
Another life in another lifetime
The weight of the cross is lifted
Simon says \"happened to me once too\"
Relief as I lift the beer to my lips
Beer finished I take my burden
Vonnie wipes my brow
With the hem of her skirt
And I walk on
Tripping again, i fall
The cross lays in the gutter
Beer addled I lift it again
As the women look on
Showing concern and scorn
In equal measure
As I fall again
At the top of the hill
They take away my clothes
I weep for my lost shoes
Then laugh at the irony
The carpenter nailed
Can\'t even see my house
Maybe I have to be higher
Something died
I could feel it slip away
Down to the ground
The lamentations faded
Friends lift me down
Prepare me
Lock me away
In the cool air and darkness
I look back
Oh too late now
But I cant help wonder
When they took me down
Did you hand my cross
To someone else
