An Inspired Withdrawal

I come home each day

more tired than the last one

dropping

into my little space

and thinking

it’s a free for all

and only the hungriest

seem to make it

but I’ve had my fill.

I’m giving up.

I’d like to retreat now

to a nice quiet place

but don’t have a lot of money

so I’m stuck here

in this room

but I can dream

making my own world

melting in and out

of it

one trip

at a time

I can dream…

and there it is

just beyond the closet

a whole blue sky

and a sweet green ocean

in there

a little island in the middle

of it

where palm trees sway

and cool sea breezes

ruffle my hair.

I step into my world

and the sand burns my feet!

I hop hop hop

on my tippy toes

all the way

down to the cold blue water

where I breathe a sigh of relief.

Opening my eyes

I see black shadows

circling and

fear death

but it’s just thousands of little fishes

there to greet me

hiding beneath the surface

of the water

I reach out and grab one

then let it go

laughing

I splash

among them

flipping onto my back

and floating

all the way up

into the sky

to the gods

to the sun

to all the points of light

where golden rays sit

flush on my face.

I can feel them

and this time its for real.
