A teacher onced asked me
“Are you mute, can you speak?”
While I froze still, with a pen in my hand
“Did you draw on the whiteboard”
But I hadn’t, I had only picked it up
And seen what was scribbled
When the teacher walked in
And stared at me in horror
I try to tell her that it wasn’t me
But my lips wouldn’t move
I wanted to run away
But my body wouldn’t budge
My heart beats loudly as I swallow
I utter a single sound “Um”
And the teacher almost yells
“Huh, what did you say?”
My fear catches in my throat
Fright clouds my vision
I shake my head, it’s all I can do
And the teacher wonders if I’m mute
