AND THE PAST TENSE IS: AWAKE

I’m told the past tense of asleep is slept

but that’s a contention I cannot accept

I hope you don’t think I’m being a bore

but a past tense is something that’s happened before

so may I suggest it must be a mistake

for before I was asleep I was wide awake.
