Poetry shouldn’t be read

like a shopping list

or a text message,

like a newspaper headline,

or that recipe for spag-bol,

or a social media post.

Poetry should be read

like wedding vows

or raising a glass for a funeral toast

or congratulations it’s a girl

or when my wife says

love, I’ve been thinking.
