Accidental Poet

A Mother and Father’s Son

They signed the adoption papers

Adopting me as their son

Unknowing of the future

The man I would become

I tried to be all they wanted

Without knowing what that was

To fill in the blanks

Building proud and happy judges

Success sometimes hit and miss

Not always seeing eye to eye

Somewhere along the way

I learned to want what I desire

Fast forward fifty years

I start to see through their eyes

Their hopes and fears

All the reasons for their sighs

The grey hairs I gave them

That should have been warm hugs

Now old photos of them

On my heart they warmly tug

I feel them with me all the time

From Heaven to Earth

There in my heart

I know my own worth

A life spent

Chasing parental pride

A reflection now back to them

A son smiles so wide
