Thoughts at a Restless Bar

A bunch of guys in affliction shirts

Helpless
Here to escape their marriages
Here to feel important

How did it get this way
When did it become something to escape

I watch you slip your ring
Down in the pocket
While no one’s looking

And every time I hear
“Pocket!” Shouted out
I think of what you stole
The ring that matches your wife at home
But hers is still warm against her finger
While yours holds the dust and ash of cigarette smoke
Now buried treasure
Now something buried from the world
And why? Is there something you feel void of?

Is it not what you thought
Is it not what you planned for

Behind the smoky mask of communal acceptance, is it worth it
Do you long to wake up with the one you love
Full frontal lobe at attention
Not feeling to feel but feeling something elsewhere
Don’t run away

This place is not an escape
It’s a prison labeled as “Eden”
Once you’re in the viper’s mouth how do you plan to get out

This place is not what we think
This is a mirage in a desert of loneliness
But everyone wakes up
Where will you be?
