Today, I offer a quiet thank you,
Since you left, I’ve found what’s true.
I’m special—for me, I finally see,
And if I am, how could you be a stranger to me?
Your silly little words still cross my mind,
And in those memories, soft smiles I find.
You said I was beautiful—I never agreed,
But maybe I am, in the way I need.
You once compared me to stars so bright,
And now you’ve found your own moonlight.
He may be lovely, sure to the eye,
But even the moon holds scars in the sky.
You helped me see who I could be,
Even when you stopped choosing me.
So thank you—for showing me my view,
For leaving, and letting me choose me too.
I recently finished the novel Thank You for Leaving Me, and this poem was inspired by its title.
