The melancholy melodies
come drifting on the evening breeze
and she finds herself in rhythm, keeping time.
Her senses play a mellow beat,
the silent taps of her bare feet,
as she tries to gather up the day in rhyme.
The harmonies strike up the room,
the wireless plays a Western tune,
she dances a little country on the boards.
She tries her best to sing along
to that old-timey mountain song,
to humming some when she can’t recall the words.
How she loves all the simple things,
bread and wine, what the mailman brings,
the aromas of a summer’s afternoon.
She moves the way the barley sways
when mowing into harvest days
and her evenings find her waiting for the moon.
She’s a comfort to the souls in grief,
beware her wrath when comes a thief,
comes a beggar and she’ll open wide her door.
A charming maid when greeting you,
will seek you out with much ado,
and to those who know, a scholar and much more.
She’s known to make the daisies grow;
her warmth can melt the winter snow,
she’s the lantern in the dark when you’re alone,
the hope when you’re in hopelessness,
a path out of the wilderness,
when forsaken, she’s the one who’ll take you home.
She’s the blushing Señorita;
she’s the Santa in Maria,
she’s the smiling Mona Lisa to us all.
The patron saint of all things fair,
the fearless flame in dark despair,
she’s the one who’ll hear your voices when you call.
As a sister, as a daughter,
as a mother, she’s your author,
she’s the passion in the verses of your song.
She’s a poetess, she’s a lady,
she’s the femme fatale, she’s crazy,
she’s the milk and she’s the honey that you long.
The one who holds the reins of life,
the nurtured touch through fear and strife,
she’s your confidante, your lover and your friend.
The cradled child, the loving hand,
the womb of life in her command,
she’s a million poems a thousand poets have penned.
An empty room when she’s not there,
a failing soul without her care,
the embracing Magdalena when you fall.
Lay praise on her eternal strength,
she’s heaven bound, from heaven sent
for forever she shall be in ever all.
