the pain
was not his to hold
but he cradles it
when i am cold
my body full of mould
he lifts my face to meet his eyes
and wipes my cheeks dry
i bury my head in embarrassment
no he says look at me
you don\'t need to hide
i was a daisy first
as a child
small and full of life
ready for whichever path i would find
i grew into a sunflower
aching for light
inevitably, the rain washed away
each of my petals
now i am small
fragile
not nearly as agile
soaked through my skin
even rain-stained within
damp, dreary
exhausted and weary
still flinching from the last man
that stamped on my heart
he does not move fast
he is slow
gentle
renewing my petals
reminding my stem
how to hold me again
he placed me in sun
when i knew only rain
i feel the rays
illuminate the pain
shed light on the broken parts of my brain
so we can both see
what needs to be changed
and what can stay
the pain was not your responsibility
but my love, you are fixing me
i had forgotten to breathe
but now your love is all i can see.
