Pete the poet

SUNSET TO SUNSET

I could see all their faces

As they streamed passed my box

I could hear their voices

As though they came through a Vox

They boomed delight – a desire

I wanted the record player sound turned higher.

I would lean into the driving wind

And settle for a cool rainy day

If the sun refused to shine,

Somehow I couldn’t have my way

Yet sleeping is really like flying

And living is only a prison.

We walk together through the sands

We ignore the falling stars

As we stride onward hand in hand

For the grains of time are stacked high

Ready, as if waiting for something afar

To arrive, resplendent in colour;

Sunset to sunset the miles stretch forever.

We walk the empty plains

But the sorrow rains

Like petals from a fading lily

We see sunrises, but ignore the essentials

Like half blind animals we turn silly,

As the sunset approaches I look at you

The long shadows surround me and you

We embrace as the warm sun fades away

Another sunset passes, sunrises to another day
