Matthew R. Callies

Glooscap Speaks

I rose from the dust of dawn,

shaped by the hand of the Great Spirit,

and the world bent beneath my stride.

Mountains listened when I spoke,

rivers learned to follow their paths,

animals took their names from my tongue.

I taught the people

how to build fire from stone,

how to set snares,

how to fish with patience.

When greed swelled in the belly of giants,

I broke their spears.

When chaos leapt from the water,

I stilled it with a word.

Do not call me a god.

I am a brother,

a teacher,

a shadow on the horizon

walking always ahead,

leaving tracks for you to follow.
