FRIENDS
Two old friends in two villages
Lived apart.
Across a stream on a small footbridge,
They would pass.
With and without occasion,
They invited each other over.
They’d forget to leave,
And night would catch them.
Whenever one would rise
To head home,
The host would say, “I won’t let you go alone,”
And would escort him to the old footbridge.
Once they crossed the bridge,
They’d light another pipe,
And the conversation would start anew,
Never ending…
Thus, escorting
First one,
Then the other,
They stayed on the bridge
Until morning dawned...
