Strings of Steel

You were fighting wars in your head,

I didn’t know anything about.

The kiss lingered a little too long,

That hug was a little too tight.

Were you silently saying goodbye?

And then you told me everything,

I went home alone; the tears never stopped.

I called you over; I couldn’t sleep,

Thoughts of the unthinkable haunting me.

And you didn’t say it would all be fine,

And we held each other as we cried.

I broke that day, but I healed soon,

Because through the blue waves,

You still reached for me.

That night we held on,

To the strings of our fragile love,

Turns out they were made of steel,

Stretched but never broken.
