What tyrant and omnipotent one
Can bind spring with chains?
Put chains on its ankles,
Restrain its steps?
Spring comes on tiptoes
In light shoes,
Yes, just like a ballerina
Cloaked in a silk floral cloak.
It climbs the branches, sprouts buds,
Makes flowers bloom, conducts the birds,
Sounds the space, digs underground,
Flies high – brings down jets of sunny rain.
And who has known it and who knows what gender it is?
Neuter as in Croatian?
Or masculine as in French and German?
Or feminine as in Spanish?
Whoever has seen spring, has seen Life.
