Taking Down the Winter Curtains

Taking Down the Winter Curtains

In wintertime they are hung as doubles

As insurance against weather’s troubles

Thin laced airy ones are the externals

Covered on the inside with heavy thermals

Put up late in the autumn, say

Taken down before the first of May

Sometimes open to let the light in

Mostly closed to protect against the wind

Open at times to view snow covered trees

Closed as the gale brings you to your knees

Thrown back to irradiate

sealed as the snow accumulates

Open on a rare sunlit day

Closed when you’re going away

Drawn back to let in the light

Closed so you can sleep at night

Taken down, wash, dry, iron, and store til the Fall

Going back up then, if I have the wherewithal
